Best Top Autumn Treks (2026): Himalayan Treks to explore in September, October , November

by Akshat Rana 2026-09-17

A few years ago, if you’d asked trekkers what their favorite trekking seasons were, they’d have said summer and winter without a second thought. But now, there is one more contender on the list, and it is quickly gaining popularity year on year, becoming a favorite for many, and rightly so. We are talking about autumn! There are many reasons why.

Weather Predictability: With the offset of the monsoon, weather activity in the Himalayas becomes more predictable; in fact, trekking in general becomes safer and in favor of the trekkers.

The Scenery: After the monsoon, the air tends to become clearer, and the sky is at its bluest due to clear visibility; you can easily see mountains that are kilometers away. Honestly, it feels like you are in the windows wallpaper.

Best of both seasons: You get the best of both seasons. Because it is a transitional season, you encounter snow as well as withering monsoon flowers. The whole scenery looks like something straight out of a movie set.

The Colors: The flowers and grass adopt different shades of red, golden, and amber. The carpet of golden leaves on the trail looks otherworldly, making you feel like you're walking on gold. The color contrast is as good as it can be.

Fewer Crowds: Because it is a transitional season between the busiest and most popular seasons, there are fewer crowds.

1. Har Ki Dun Trek

Trek Difficulty: Moderate
Region: Garhwal Himalayas, Uttarakhand

The Har Ki Dun Trek is considered one of the best treks to do in autumn in India and is also known as the “Valley of Gods.” It lies within the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park. Autumn totally transforms the colors of the valley’s landscapes; the meadows turn golden, with snow-capped mountains in the background and a crisp blue sky. The color contrast is very easy on the eyes.

Trekkers from this valley get an unrestricted view of Swargarohini, Ruinsara Lake, Black Peak, and Bandarpoonch. Along the way, you encounter charming villages of the Garhwal Himalayas, which offer a chance to experience the beauty of Garhwali culture, making your trek truly unforgettable, such as Osla Village

2. Roopkund Trek

Trek Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
Region: Uttarakhand

One of the few treks that is not only famous in India but also globally because of its bone-chilling skeleton mystery. Trekkers also prefer this trek because of its marvellous beauty; it basically has everything: you encounter Ali Bedni Bugyal on the way, which is Asia's largest and greenest meadow, along with thick oak forests and breathtaking peaks like Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, making it one of the most loved treks in India.

During autumn, the foliage turns ambery and red, leaving you mesmerised, and the snow on the trail melts, making it less challenging compared to any other time of the year. This trek is not suitable for complete beginners; it is advisable to have experience of at least 1 to 2 easy to moderate level treks.

3. Dayara Bugyal Trek

Trek Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Region: Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is renowned for its spectacular autumn landscapes, and the Dayara Bugyal Trek is one of the finest examples. Despite being relatively underrated during autumn, Dayara Bugyal becomes incredibly scenic as the season progresses.

The expansive meadows gradually turn golden, while the surrounding forests develop shades of red and amber. The trek also offers impressive views of Himalayan peaks such as Bandarpoonch, Srikanth, Jaonti, and Draupadi Ka Danda.

Early autumn still retains some greenery, while later in the season, the meadows take on a distinctly golden appearance. The trek offers a beautiful Himalayan experience without the extreme winter conditions found on many higher-altitude trails.

Dayara Bugyal is also considered suitable for families, including children as young as 8 years old, provided they are physically fit and adequately prepared for the trek.

4. Bali Pass Trek

Trek Difficulty: Difficult
Region: Uttarakhand
Maximum Altitude: 4,953 meters

The Bali Pass Trek is not an ordinary Himalayan trek. It is a challenging high-altitude crossover trek involving steep sections, rugged terrain, and the demanding Bali Pass itself. It is not suitable for beginners.

Completing this trek gives trekkers a sense of the immense scale and raw beauty of the Himalayas. Autumn is generally considered a favorable season for the trek because conditions are typically more stable after the monsoon, while snow levels on some sections may be lower than during the peak winter period. However, the trek remains physically and technically demanding.

The route offers remarkable landscape diversity, including snow-covered mountains, dense forests, alpine meadows, streams, and high-altitude terrain. The region is also home to wildlife such as musk deer and bharal (blue sheep), although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

5. Kedarkantha Trek

Trek Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Region: Uttarakhand

The Kedarkantha Trek is widely known as one of India's most popular beginner-friendly Himalayan winter treks. However, autumn offers a completely different experience and is often overlooked by trekkers planning their Himalayan adventures.

As you ascend, the landscape changes beautifully. The trail passes through forests of pine, oak, deodar, and rhododendron, which begin taking on shades of red, orange, and gold during autumn.

The post-monsoon skies generally offer excellent visibility, allowing trekkers to enjoy panoramic views of surrounding Himalayan peaks. Among the prominent peaks visible from the route are Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak.

Trek Difficulty: Moderate
Region: Uttarakhand

The Phulara Ridge Trek is located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarkashi district. The name “Phulara” is associated with flowers, and the trail is known for its beautiful seasonal vegetation.

The trek offers panoramic Himalayan views and takes you through forests dominated by oak, rhododendron, and deodar. The region is also home to wildlife such as musk deer, leopards, and Himalayan black bears, although sightings depend on luck and natural conditions.

What makes Phulara Ridge particularly special is the ridge-walking experience. For long stretches, trekkers can see mountains and valleys on both sides of the ridge, creating a unique sense of walking through the heart of the Himalayas.

The combination of ridge walks, dense forests, open meadows, and expansive mountain views makes Phulara Ridge an excellent option for trekkers looking for a less conventional Himalayan experience.
