5 Best Treks in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is known for adventure treks for every trekker. But when you have more than 40 of the best trekking destinations on your screen, then picking the perfect trek based on your expectations and trekking skill level becomes quite an overwhelming task.

That’s why I have shortlisted my top 5 favorite treks in Himachal that you can select from.  Whether you want the dramatic landscapes of Hampta Pass or the mystical embrace of Bhrigu Lake these are the treks that stay with you forever.

Now, let me tell you why your next trek should be one of these unforgettable adventures:

1. Hampta Pass Trek – The Valley Of Contrast

If you ask me to name the topmost trek in Himachal, then Hampta Pass is the first name on my personal favorite list. This trek has something that will make you fall in love with it. What makes this trek special is the beautiful transition of the lush green zone to the barren desert of Spiti valley. Plus, this is a circuit trek that starts from the Manali and reaches Chapru, at 11,100ft, which is the highest point of the Hampta Pass trek. From here, you can get a taxi and return to Manali via the Atal Tunnel

Best time to visit Hampta Pass trek: Summer and Monsoon are the peak seasons to experience the beautiful contrast of Manali’s lush greenery and Lahaul Spiti’s rocky yet astonishingly amazing landscape. However, if you want a less crowded time to visit this trek, then August and September will be a great time to explore the Hampta Pass.

Difficulty Level: Hampta Pass belongs to the Moderate level of difficulty. But if you are trekking during the Summer and post-monsoon season, then the warmer weather and clear sky improve trekking conditions for beginner trekkers.

2. Sar Pass Trek – A Snowy Wonderland

Sar Pass is the second best trek of my favorite list of treks. It is one of the best spring treks in Himachal Pradesh. When you are standing at the height of 13,800 ft, everything beneath your feet looks like white snow that scratches as far as you can see. If the sky is clear, then panoramic views of the snowy mountains of the great Himalayas are nothing but magic.

What Is The Best Time For Sar Pass Trek?

The best time for doing the Sar Pass Trek is from May to October. You can visit any time during this period but my personal favorite time for this trek is summer (May to June). When you are trekking in the Summer, the days and nights are less cold compared to the months of November to April, when trekking is extremely difficult in this region. Whereas the summer season offers favorable temperature and weather conditions for a smooth trekking experience.

Why Sar Pass Trek So Special?

The key highlights of the Sar Pass Trek show a perfect blend of adventure, nature, and culture. Its challenging terrain with steep ascents and narrow ridges adds thrill, while scenic campsites provide a true Himalayan wilderness experience. Along the way, interacting with locals enriches the journey with cultural insights.

Overall, if you are someone with some trekking experience and looking for a challenging trek, then this is a perfect trek for you.

3. Buran Ghati – The Ultimate Adventure Trek

The next trek on my favorites list is Buran Ghati. I completed this trek last September, and believe me, the Barua village on this trek reminds me of The Shire which is a fictional village of ‘Lord of the Rings’. The landscapes of lush grasslands they made me put into today’s list. I had started this trek from the Janglik village that is around 160 km from Shimla

Key Highlights Of This Trek?

This 7-day trek passes through the stunning Dayara meadows, where trekkers can witness nature in its full glory. Also, the final day at the Barua village makes your trekking journey truly special. There is a rock on the way from where the whole Barua village can be seen which gives similar views of the fictional village of Shire.

Who Can Do Buran Ghati Trek?

The Buran Ghati Trek falls into the Moderate to Difficult level of difficulty, which requires strong endurance and technical skill, especially for the ice wall descent.

So, if you have previous trekking experience of some Moderate treks and wish to push yourself to new limits then this trek is for you.

4. Bhrigu Lake Trek – A Short Journey For Spiritual Awakening

The fourth trek on this list is named after Adi Rishi Bhrigu and is dedicated to beginner trekkers who want to explore a more challenging and spiritually stimulating trail.

This 3-day short trek starts from Rola Kholi Base Camp, which is about 25 km north of Manali, and takes you through a variety of scenic spots. When you reach the Bhrigu lake (14,100 ft), you are blessed with a gorgeous alpine lake along with panoramic views of Hanuman Tibba, Deo Tibba, and parts of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges

How Difficult Is The Bhrigu Lake Trek?

This beautiful lake trail falls into a moderate level of difficulty. But, the steady and continuous ascent gives you a thrill of hiking at a high altitude.

What Is The Ideal Time For This Trek?

Also, the pleasant weather of the Summer and Monsoon (June to September) seasons makes it much easier to continue the trek. But the months of August and September are my favorite for the Bhrigu Lake trek.

Overall, it’s a great trek for first-timers who want a quick but rewarding high-altitude trekking experience.

5. Pin Bhaba Trek – The Most Thrilling Crossover Trek

Last but not the least, Pin Bhaba is the final name of my best 5 treks in Himachal. This is the trek and surprises you from day 1 of your trek. The unspoiled forests of coniferous trees and turquoise water and Phutsirang River delta feels like a scene from our story books. This 8-day trek takes you from Kinnaur’s lush region to the barren landscape of Spiti Valley

Who Can Do It: This Pin Bhaba trek is Moderate to difficult, and it is definitely not recommended for first timers. So, if you are a seasoned trekker who has some previous experience of moderate to difficult treks, then one is for you.
