Traversing Kalindi Pass needs Knowledge and Experience
Kalindi Pass is 6000 meters above the sea level which lies in the Great Himalayas. The exhilarating trails demand enthusiasm and deep knowledge of trekking in high altitude treks. It is a connecting pass of Gangotri and Gastoli village.
It starts from Gangotri. Gangotri is a holy city and famous pilgrimage site, it is one of the Char Dhams. Glaciers are the famous attraction of this place which makes this trek thrilling. The other attraction is sight of Mt. Shivling and Bhagirathi peaks, the views will accompany you from the base till summit.
Trek the Himalayas
This trek starts from Sankri which is the base camp of more than 20+ treks, it remains busy by the hustle and bustle of trekkers. On the top of Kedarkantha there is a temple of Lord Shiva and Ganesh where spirituality can be felt. The fresh air and serene environment are enough to add this trek in your “must do” list. Villagers every year visit this place at the time of their festival to worship “Someshwar Devta”.

Dehradun to Gangotri (245 km) (10/12 hours) (10,145 feet)
Our vehicle picks you up from Dehradun or Rishikesh then leaves for Uttarkashi through the route of Mussoorie. The Tehri Lake can be seen during the journey.
Drive to Gangotri is along the right bank of River Ganga (Bhagirathi) in middle of the way visit Gangnani, hot spring you can take sulphur bath in it. On the way you will get the views of Great Himalayas, Harshil and alluring green forest. Check in a hotel and in the evening visit holy city Gangotri, at 7 pm attend Aarti of River Ganga, it is worshipped by the Hindus.
In the evening you can explore this place on you own have dinner and overnight stay in hotel.
Gangotri to Chirbasa (9 km) (6 hours) (11761 feet)
Start your trek to Chirbasa, the name of this place is Chirbasa because Pine trees are known as “Chir” in Hindi and you can find pine trees all over here. Now, you have to go through a market then the trail is through forest area, you will see many peaks in front of you and after some time you will come across waterfalls, the trail is levelled and the walk is easy. You have to cross a stream over a bridge when you cross that bridge a valley opens up, the big snow-capped mountains will mesmerise you.
After crossing the third ridge you will reach a valley with pine trees, when you cross this valley you will reach a place where the trail is in between the boulders; it can be called boulder zone, walk carefully as there are many rocks or stones on the way, keep following the trail.
The way to Chirbasa is through forest, it is few minutes away now, and there is a camping ground in Chirbasa near Bhagirathi River which makes this campsite more beautiful. From here you will get views of Bhagirathi peaks and glance of Gaumukh glacier. Setup your tents here, overnight stay and dinner in camps.
Chirbasa to Bhojbasa (5 km) (3 hours) (12761 feet)
Start trek to Bhojbasa after TM Program and breakfast. The trail is widen now and you can easily reach Bhojbasa as the climb isn’t tough. You will come across many landslide prone areas on the way
As you go higher near Bhojbasa you will encounter breathtaking views of Bhagirathi peaks, and magnificent view of Mt. Shivling, Sanyasis and Sadhus can be seen in the caves. There are places where you can take hot drinks in comfortable small tent shops.
Cross ridges, it will take some time and the trail becomes rocky and barren. Bhojbasa is the widest point in the valley, campsite is in a plain terrain from where you can get magnificent views of the peaks and Bhagirathi River flows beside. Bhojbasa has a small temple, you can explore the area in the afternoon, the sunset in the evening is entrancing, and the sun sets behind the Bhagirathi group of Peaks which makes them look glittering and extremely beautiful.
Relish the beauty enjoy incredible scenery and sight of Mt. Shivling. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.
Bhojbasa to Tapovan (7 km) (6/7 hours) (14202 feet)
Trek to Gaumukh from Bhojbasa it is an easy trek. Gaumukh is the source of River Ganga, it is known as Bhagirathi River when it comes out from here, people worship this place, and it appears like a cow’s mouth so it is named as Gaumukh. Today the trail is steep and most difficult climb from Gaumukh to Tapovan.
There flows a stream called Akash Ganga, the trail remains fully covered by snow, there is hard ice and boulders in some areas, the climb to Gangotri glacier from here becomes very steep so you have to walk carefully so that you don’t get slipped. It is difficult to find the route to the top so a local guide is highly required. Make sure you reach there before lunch. But, as you climb higher the views get majestic and clearer, now you can see the tall peaks clearly in front of you.
The climate gets very cold but some saints permanently live here so you can take inspiration from them and trek towards Tapovan after having lunch. Trek from Gaumukh to Tapovan is a steep ascent and it will take 2 hours to reach there, when you reach Tapovan you will clearly see Mt. Shivling which looks extremely beautiful and from here you will get the best sight of it. Mt. Meru Bhagirtahi Peaks are clearly visible from here.
Tapovan is a large meadow below Mt. Shivling suitable for camping further there is Neel Tal from where you can get more clearer views of Mt. Meru it takes 2 hours of climb to reach there. Find a suitable place for camping in the meadow of Tapovan, place your tents there, dinner and overnight stay in the tents.
Acclimatization Day at Tapovan
Acclimatization is necessary on treks at high altitude it prevents Altitude Motion Sickness. Today you can explore the nearby surroundings.
Neel Tal is a beautiful Lake near the campsite from where Mt. Meru is visible, explore the meadows of Tapovan or you can simply rest today.
Tapovan to Nandanvan (8 km) (5 hours) (14345 feet)
Today is the difficult day of your trek as you will be crossing Gangotri glacier to reach Nandanvan, so have your breakfast early in the morning.
tart your trek by climbing the ridge of Tapovan, you have to cross Akash Ganga stream after that reach Gangotri Glacier and find a way to descend down, and it is hard to find the way there so an experienced guide must be with you, you will get captivating views of group of Bhagirathi peaks glistening in front of you.
On glacier you will find thick ice, broken pieces or remains of rocks and big boulders, trekking on Gangotri glacier is difficult as it is slippery and the rocks can fall so you need to be careful. On glacier you will find thick ice, broken pieces or remains of rocks and big boulders, it will take 2 hours to cross this glacier. Descend now and you have to climb up 100 meters to reach Nandanvan the climb is through a landslide prone area.
The Nandanvan meadow is at the base of Bahgirathi, it is a meadow and camping is done here. When you reach Nandanvan, you will have mesmerizing and clear views of Mt. shivling, Mt. Meru, Kedar Dome. The meadow is windy as it is at high altitude and you get majestic and enthralling views of snow-capped mountains around you.
Setup your tents on the camping ground enjoy the enchanting views of this place, then Dinner and overnight stay in tents.
Nandanvan to Vasuki Tal (6 km) (6/7 hours) (16332 feet)
Vasuki Tal is the basecamp of Mt. Satopath and Mt. Vasuki. You will be trekking along Chaturangi glacier to reach Vasuki Tal, it is believed that in it Lord Vishnu took bath.
The aura of this place is divine, many of the places are related to Hindu mythology, and Vasuki Tal is one of those places. To reach there you have to walk on rocky terrain, ascend isn’t very difficult but is long and you may get tired. You will get the entrancing views of Chaturangi glacier.
Vasuki Tal is all covered by the mountains and this lake freezes in winters, you can see Brahma Kamal and other Himalayan flowers shining around this exciting lake, explore this area as it has beautiful views to offer and a unique lake. It will take time to reach there so overnight stay will be there in tents.
Setup your tents and enjoy your meal there after that overnight stay in tents.
Acclimatization Day at Vasuki Tal
Let your body adjust according to the environment to prevent altitude sickness, you can relax today or go for a short hike nearby from tomorrow the difficult part of this trek starts.
Have healthy food and retire for the night early.
Vasuki Tal to Khara Patthar (3/4 hours) (17979 feet)
The trek today is through moraine area and boulder zone, the views of mountains chain will be the phenomenal part of the journey. Some parts will need energy so be sure you have healthy breakfast for good energy.
The chain of mountains will not leave your side until you reach Khara Patthar. From this campsite Mt. Satopanth the second biggest mountain in Gangotri siblings will be visible. Setup your camps here and retire for the night.
Khara Patthar to Shweta Glacier (4/5 hours) (18044 feet)
Shweta glacier is not a great camping site desired by the trekkers but at this place you can set your camps. The trek will be challenging because of the glaciers and moraines, but they can be crossed using technical skills.
The landscapes will change and setting of these will show you different sides of the places, you can experience the thrill and adventure both.
Reach your campsite Shweta glacier and find a place where you can set your tents and retire for the night.
Shweta Glacier to Kalindi base (4/5 hours) (183722 feet)
Today you have to reach Kalindi Base Camp, the trails are thrilling and scary but the glaciers and chain of mountains will accompany you because it is all glaciated.
Have glimpse of Chaturangi glacier (4 colours) en route and most of the time you will be trekking through the moraine area. After a long hike reach Kalindi Base Camp.
From the Base Camp you can catch the views of Kalindi Peak, this sight will energize for the trek further. Pitch your tents here and get the briefing for tomorrow, the safest route and techniques will be discussed.
After having food retire for the night.
Kalindi base to Kalindi Pass (19685 feet) and descend to Arwatal (12/13 hours) (13057 feet)
You have come to the main day of this expedition and today is going to be the longest and toughest day. Get up early and leave for Kalindi Pass (19685 feet).Keep one thing in mind that weather can change so you need to be prepared and add up extra day in the itinerary for summit attempt.
Ascend through the thrilling trail and you will see some crevasses which are not visible, use the ropes for ascending and descending both and be aware and very careful. Use your skills and follow the instructions of professional guide and you can reach the summit.
Standing at the top of Kalindi Pass will be joyous and ecstatic because of the successful climb. The mountain views will be very close and mind boggling. Do not spend much time there because descent is going to be time consuming.
Your campsite is Arwatal, descend using ropes when you reach the levelled part, take rest breaks and come to the campsite. Celebrate the success of traversing this huge pass, it will boost your confidence to next level fill your heart with happiness and joy.
Wait for the food to be served and retire for the night.
Arwatal to Ghastoli (5/6 hours) (12454 feet)
The trek will surprise you with three to four rivers you have to cross on the way to reach Ghastoli. The hike is surely going to be amazing and it will offer new rewards.
Ghastoli has an Army establishment and the security level is high there because it is the border between Tibet and China. Your campsite is beside River Arwa.
The camps will be pitched at peaceful setting and in the reviving environment. So set up the tents, have food after relaxing and retire for the night.
Ghastoli to Mana (5/6 hours) Drive from Mana to Badrinath and Auli (2 hours)
Leave Ghastoli and descend towards India’s last village Mana. Reach there and vehicles will be arranged for you, drive is to Badrinath and then Auli.
The roads are well maintained and cemented, at Badrinath you can visit Lord Vishnu’s Temple which is the famous pilgrimage site and it one of Char Dhams. From Badrinath drive is towards Auli and there you will stay in a hotel.
Auli to Dehradun (8/9 hours)
The expedition ends here, post breakfast depart to Dehradun and take unforgettable memories with you.
