Trek to the Source of River Ganga; Snout of Gangotri Glacier

Gomukh Trek
Gomukh trek is the most famous one in Uttarakhand. Hence, it is a spiritual tour and dose of thrilling adventure too!

Gomukh is the snout of Gangotri glacier and origin of sacred River Ganga. The river is known as Bhagirathi when comes out from the snout.

So, the name “Gomukh” derived from its cow’s mouth appearance. It is of great significance to Hindus.

Gomukh Trek
According to the legend, a shepherd boy was searching his lost sheep and reached the snout of Gangotri Glacier which exactly looked like a cow’s mouth and then it got its name “Gomukh” which is also mentioned in the Puranas.

Since then, saints and devotees go there to worship and travelers to explore and experience the adventure. It is great for both because of spiritual reasons and exotic adventure!

Basecamp Gangotri

Gangotri is a holy town perched at an altitude of 3,092 m on Bhagirathi River’s banks in Uttarkashi district. According to the legend, it is Goddess Ganga’s shrine. It is the part of Chota Char Dham and holds a great place in the heart of Hindu mythology and Hindu devotees.

A temple “Gangotri” is present in this region, built by “Amar Singh Thapa” in 19th Century. Therefore, the purest deity “Ganga” is worshipped in this town.

Here is the presence of many hot water springs nearby and it is believed that a dip in the pure water of Ganges washes all the sins.

History of Gangotri

– During Ashwamedha Yagna, King Sagar sent his 60,000 sons along with a horse. It got lost and the sons went in search of horse to saint Kapila’s ashram, he was in deep meditation. The saint opened his eyes in anger and turned all 60,000 sons into ashes. Afterwards, Kapila advised Anshuman (grandson of king Sagar) to request Goddess Ganga to come on earth and cleanse all the ashes and provide salvation. But he failed.

– Bhagirath’s extreme meditation made goddess Ganga to come down to earth. Lord Shiva tied Ganga and distributed the water into many streams to save earth from the powerful force.
