My experience of trekking has always been awesome, the aesthete which resides within provokes me to explore the abundant beauty and roam all around in my home because “Home is where the Heart is”. I feel my heart is lost in the mountains and whenever I bid a Goodbye to them, they recall me with a delicate smile so it becomes hard to wait for my next Adventure.

While venturing out to places there are enormous things which you should keep in mind. I committed several mistakes when I went for my first Trek, but here are some tips to keep in mind for the Beginners who want to be at peace away from the cacophony of cities.

Plan Your Destination Prudently and Get Physically Fit

Nowadays, most of the information is available on web so check about the places you want to explore and get idea about your destination. Research on the places and trails, do not go for very high altitude treks in the beginning and choose popular trails if it suits you fitness and is suitable for other members of the group.

Every trek needs physical fitness and requires practice of carrying a backpack in sheer ascends and descends. Start jogging on rough terrain around your home with load on your back to gain stamina and speed. For different altitude treks your body needs to be trained differently.

What to Wear on a Trek:

Always wear clothes warm enough, do not wear and carry less layers because the weather is unpredictable and can change anytime in the mountains so it’s good to be too warm rather than too cold. People carry less layers, shiver badly and return because the cold gets chilling and bone freezing. With a Poncho always take an extra pair of layer and socks, you might them in case of rainfall but do not make your backpack heavy with unnecessary items of same use.

Do’s and Don’ts:

Do not wear or carry cotton clothes because they do not keep you warm and don’t get dry easily. Including Jacket you should carry warm woolen layers or fleece. Carry more layers during winter season and less during summer.

The Temperature decreases at night so you may need Thermals for Night.

On a trek wear Woolen or Synthetic socks they prevent blisters when the foot is sweaty or wet.

Sun protection is important so always wear a cap or Hat.

The shoes should be strong enough with good support. The people ask if sports shoes would be comfortable but it is good to bring the right trekking shoes.

The jeans are never suitable for a trek so you need at least 2-3 trek pants for treks like Kedarkantha, Dayara Bugyal, Rupin Supin etc. Carry more for longer treks.


It depends on the duration of a trek, place you are going and the season. Do not carry heavy stuff which makes the bag heavy like excessive clothes and extra unnecessary items.

Helpful Tips For Beginners:

Carry enough water cause dehydration is the common problem in mountains and water keeps you hydrated. If you get running water en route of your trek refill your water bottles.
High energy food should be carried to mountains like Fruits, Dry fruits, Energy bars, biscuits etc.

Carry a Sunscreen (50 SPF) for protecting skin from UV Rays.

Whole group should keep one medical kit

Carry a torch, matchstick, sunglasses and toiletry items.

Be Safe During Your Treks:

It looks fun to just only go with friends but there are several dangers and the routes are confusing so hire a local guide or plan your treks with some reputed trekking companies which provides good comfort and safety.

Enjoy Trekking with your family or friends, it is good to explore together. You can help each other in case of injuries. Do inform family members about the place you are going because there are no signals on treks.

Carry money because there are less or no ATM points and Government ID proof.

Be aware of Danger and don’t touch suspicious Flora of a place because some plants can be poisonous.

Wear full sleeved and neck covering clothes to protect yourself from insect bites.

Do not Smoke or consume alcohol during a trek.

If you go somewhere and any kind of waste is generated then it becomes your duty to clean up the waste because no one is going to pick your trash. Keeping Mother Nature pristine is our responsibility so wherever you go follow the principle of “Leave No Trace” take away whatever you bring with you by not leaving any mark. Do not play loud music while enjoying the adventure activities it disturbs the Nature. Maintain the dignity of Nature and do not forget to motivate others to do the same!
