Let’s Learn About Altitude Sickness
Surya Top is situated at 12,900 ft and you start your trek from Barsu village at 7,142 ft above sea level. At this height, there are many chances of getting hit by AMS. But don’t worry it’s a natural part of high-altitude trekking and we are here to help you know about altitude sickness and how you can reduce its effect:
Our campsites are strategically placed at shorter distances to ensure a comfortable and safe trekking experience. This thoughtful placement provides ample time to rest and acclimatize, significantly reducing the chances of altitude sickness.
On the third day of the Surya Top trek, you gain less altitude compared to Day 2, giving your body much-needed time to recover. A good night’s sleep is crucial, as it allows your muscles to regain strength and prepares you for the upcoming summit push.
After reaching the breathtaking Surya Top, you’ll descend quickly to Devkund 11,697 ft, covering a significant drop in altitude. This rapid descent naturally helps your body recover from any mild symptoms of mountain sickness, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable trekking experience.
However, despite being physically fit for trek and carefully following your guide’s instructions there are chances that you might get AMS.
The early symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) often include headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping. If you experience any of these signs, inform your trek guide immediately before they get severe. They can assess your condition and provide necessary altitude sickness medication, ensuring a safe and successful trek completion.
If symptoms persist for over 12 hours, descending to the base camp is the safest option. The Surya Top trek has only one exit. Therefore, if altitude sickness occurs before Day 4 return to Barsu Base Camp.
In case, AMS develops after the summit push then descending to Raithal Base Camp is the only best option.
Pro Tip:- Always monitor your symptoms and if you notice any symptoms then inform your guide. Ignoring or hiding symptoms will only make AMS worse which can increase the risk of severe types of mountain sickness (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema & High Altitude Cerebral Edema).

Slow Recovery: Keeping pace with your group is very crucial. If you get exhausted quickly the slow pace will take a long time to reach your designated camps often resulting in less time for proper rest.
Lower Confidence: Walking behind your group can undermine your confidence, as your focus shifts to friends who may be 50-100 meters ahead of you, enjoying nature’s beauty. Whereas, you’re struggling to catch up, overwhelmed by chaotic thoughts and fatigue, which often leads to a disappointing experience and no sense of achievement.
Before You Trek
